Turnovers revisited
kj on Feb 18th 2009
Remember when all we talked about was turnovers?
The problem obviously raised its ugly head last night, as MSU posted a horrific turnover percentage of 31.4% against Purdue’s hounding man-to-man defense. I thought we should take a long-term view of the team’s turnover problems. The graph below shows MSU’s game-by-game turnover percentages over the [...]

. . . but MSU has actually forced their opponents to turn the ball over more times than they themselves have turned the ball over this season.
Who’s turning the ball over?

Coming into this season, we thought MSU might have finally beaten the turnover bug. They had ended the 2007-08 season by posting sub-20% turnover percentages in nine of their final 11 games.
To date, though, turnovers continue to be the team’s weak point on offense this season. Their turnover percentage of 21.0% ranks 163rd in the [...]
Putting it all together: Offensive efficiency during the Izzo era

A regression-based dose of hope

Before we get to more number crunching, you should check out the Bleacher Guy’s take on MSU’s seven-year conference title drought. It’s a critical, but balanced, commentary on MSU’s struggles in conference play in recent years, compared to the improvement over the course of the full season the early Izzo Final Four teams exhibited. As [...]
One more for the statheads

In the continuing saga of exploring MSU’s struggles with turnovers, I put together a simple regression model to see if I could determine how significant the effect of pace is on MSU’s offensive turnover percentage. I looked at four potential independent variables–factors that may effect how often MSU turns the ball over:
AWAY: Proxy for away [...]
