A statistical look at Michigan State basketball, with a dash of football talk

Dion Sims is a Spartan

Posted by kj on Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

This is technically a football commitment, which I don’t typically cover.  But Dion Sims clearly wants to be a Division 1 college basketball player:

In the end, the difference was the joint effort of Coaches Dantonio and Izzo, and their willingness to work with the Sims family to allow Dion his dream of attempting to play both sports at the next level.

While Dantonio and his staff did an excellent job of selling the Sims family on the future of the football program, this commitment likely would not have happened without Izzo and his interest in the recruitment.

There’s no basketball program in the country that wouldn’t like to have a 6′8″, 235-pound 6′5″, 230-pound power forward available for most of the basketball season who doesn’t use up a scholarship.  Seems like we had a guy who contributed quite a bit in that role a few years ago.

Bigger picture, this commitment speaks to the great synergy that’s building between the Spartan football and basketball programs.

I’ve added Mr. Sims to the Projected Roster page.

I think he’s actually closer to 6′6″…but still a nice situation to have!! Great pickup for both programs

    6-8? Try 6-4, maybe 6-5.

OK, OK. That sounded high, but I was going off the linked Scout article. I’ve corrected it.
