A statistical look at Michigan State basketball, with a dash of football talk

Pregame Reading

Update: For anyone checking in just before game time, here’s a good preview of the game written from a Longhorn perspective.

Saturday Morning Links

One Non-Bulleted Link

I kind of buried this in the last set of links: There’s a new blog out there called The Sports Mitten, written by friend-of-the-blog Steve.  While the blog covers all six major sports teams in the state, there’s a definitely bias toward MSU coverage.  Check out part two of Steve’s preview of the Capital One Bowl: Breaking Down the Matchups.

Today’s Other Big Game

The MSU fan in me is focused in 2:00.  The basketball fan in me is actually looking forward to 4:00 even more.  We get to see Stephen Curry, the country’s best perimeter scorer, go up against Purdue, perhaps the country’s best perimeter defensive team.  Stats:

  • Stephen Curry: Offensive rating of 126.1, 37.5% usage rate (#1 in the country), eFG% of 57.4%, assist rate of 42.1% (#5), TO% of 14.2%.
  • Purdue defense: Adjusted defensive efficiency of 80.2 (#5 in the country), defensive eFG% of 39.2% (#4), defensive TO% of 27.8% (#8).

That’s one heck of a statistical match-up.  Be sure to stay tuned to CBS after the game in Houston wraps up.

But first, let’s lasso us some Longhorns!

Suton was a stud. Good to have him back down low. Summers iced it with his clutch shooting. Awesome win. Happy holidays all!

I cannot believe what I just saw!!!

Despite poor free-throw shooting and three-point shooting, it was an amazing finish by Spartans! Well, summers’ 3 points and lucas’ free throws at the end were money shots!!!

    Heineken tastes great!

Free throws almost bit us in the ass, and I just know they will in the future if we don’t turn that stat around.

Still, that was an amazing way to finish the game.

Wooooo, indeed. My wife came down with an injury during the game, when she hurt her throat yelling at Delvon Roe. She had to resort to stamping her feet, rather than yelling when Summers dropped the three.

I don’t think I much like that Pittman, getting in the face of a guy who’s half his size.

Suton IS a stud, and sure looks to be back up to speed and making plays. Summers is stud #2 without question. Foul shooting is terrible, and though he stayed out of foul trouble for the most part, I still wanted to slap Morgan when he drew a couple of his fouls.

Bottom line, MSU scrapped one out for a change, and did it against a more-than-quality opponent. Looking forward to the full recap.

    w00t!

ecstatic we won, even happier with how we won. Stellar defense from a team that hasn’t been very good or consistent in that area, and the biggest salute goes to T Walton. To shut down a gunner like Abrams is remarkable, I still see him making shots from the bleachers at the Palace game.

Great D, great mental toughness and now that we’re at full strength, Izzo can mix and match based either on the foe or based on who’s hot on a given night. Today you got a lot of Ibok and Green, and less Allen and Gray. Next week against Oakland, I would anticipate less Ibok and more small, fast guys.

I didn’t have to deal with an injured wife, but apparently I scared my wife’s cat into hiding under the bed with my Summers 3 celebration, oh well that cat needs to become a Spartan!!

Just gotta work on the free throws, especially Lucas (as the guy who will handle the ball) and Roe (who is going to get hacked a lot)
