A statistical look at Michigan State basketball, with a dash of football talk

The new uniforms

Posted by kj on Monday, October 20th, 2008

There’s just 24 hours left to take a shot at winning a free copy of College Basketball Prospectus 2008-09 by sharing your best Spartan memories.

I decided to bump my comments on the new uniforms from the Midnight Madness Flickr slide show.  Because analyzing the details of basketball uniforms is just the kind of hard-hitting analysis I know my readers have come to expect.

Positive: I like the fronts of the uniforms. It’s a nice clean look, highlighting the script “State” logo, which I’m a big fan of.  And you’ve got the small Spartan logo at the the bottom of the shorts.

Negative: I’m not a fan of the backs of the uniforms. The curved stripes on the shorts, along with the tight-fitting topics, make them look like dresses when the players are running. (I was unable to get a good shot of this phenomenon.)

agreed, the fronts are great but of course when Nike does something nice and simple, they have to compensate with some overblown gimmick, the vertical stripes on the back look bad. Not quite as bad as the front of UConn’s jerseys last year (which looked like the number was in a box) but those backs are pretty bad.

Hopefully the rest of league will get plenty of time to look at those backs as we race by them, though.

I do like the neatness of the uniforms in front, but I think they’re a bit bland, nothing worse. The backs don’t seem to hit me as strange, with the exception of some of the thinner players. With Dahlman and Lucious, there’s almost too many letters to fit across the back with their narrow frames (the fact that they have robust double digit numbers doesn’t help) and they end up looking too busy. I’m fine with the shorts, but the do look billowy, especially contrasted with the form-fitting tops. I don’t care for the style that jerseys are adopting, but they’re better than shorts with one inch inseams, I’ll concede.
