Monday Night Links

Here’s a blow-by-blow account of the practice session for MSU media members held last week. Do you think they’d let a loyal Spartan blogger in next year?
(I will now use this lame segueway to talk about my Breslin Center glories of days gone by: As a sophomore, I attended walk-on tryouts just for the heck of it. Early in the first scrimmage, I made a three-pointer over Mike Respert [brother of Shawn]. On my second three-point attempt, then-assistant coach Brian Gregory yelled out “Money!” as I released the ball. And it fell in. I can shoot the rock, baby. Nonetheless, they gave the walk-on spot to Respert. I chalk it up to nepotism, plain and simple.)
Russell Byrd visited Kentucky for their week-early Midnight Madness (Hat tip: UMHoops). And, indeed, there was a whole lot of madness in Lexington. Byrd’s Dad:
“He’s going to keep chewing on stuff,” his father, Kelly Byrd, said. “He’ll go to Michigan State on Friday for their Madness. He may figure things out. He may not.
“Coach (Billy) Gillispie and Coach (Tom) Izzo, all the coaches say the same thing: At some point in time, you’ll just know. He’s just waiting for that point in time.”
Andy Katz posts his final preseason top 25. He’s got MSU listed third among the group of seven teams he sees jockeying for position behind #1 North Carolina.
Mike DeCourcy asserts that results from international play could be an indication the deeper 3-point line will have more of an effect on college basketball than most people think.
Beyond the Arc has wrapped up its list of the greatest college basketball programs of all time. Kentucky was #1, reflecting the emphasis placed on consistency throughout the list. Complete list of Big Ten teams on the list:
- (6) Indiana
- (14) Illinois
- (15) Michigan State (rest easy, Mr. Miller says we’ll pass the Illini this season)
- (18) Ohio State
- (28) Purdue
- (29) Michigan
- (33) Wisconsin
- (43) Iowa
Eight teams in the top 50. Not bad. Here’s to the Big Ten, a bastion of all-time greatness!
