A statistical look at Michigan State basketball, with a dash of football talk

Two more scheduling notes

Posted by kj on Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Texas and IPFW have both released their schedules, so we now have dates/times for all the major nonconference games MSU is slated to play.  Here’s the updated list:

Wednesday, November 19 (7:00): At Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne

Friday-Sunday, November 27-30 (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU): Old Spice Classic in Orlando (MSU will open against Maryland at 7:00 on ESPN2 on the 27th; full bracket)

Wednesday, December 3 (9:15, ESPN): North Carolina at Ford Field (Big Ten-ACC Challenge)

Saturday, December 20 (2:00, CBS): Texas in Houston

Saturday, January 10 (1:00, CBS): Kansas at home

That’s seven quality games across two months of nonconference play.  Certainly couldn’t ask for more rigorous preparation for conference and NCAA tournament play.  Of course, is our Spartans don’t play to their ability right of the gate, they could also dig themselves a pretty big hole in terms of NCAA seeding.

There’s no TV listed for the IPFW game on their site; not sure if BTN would broadcast a road game?

With all the major nonconference games now set, I assume MSU is just waiting for the Big Ten to release the conference schedule before they release their full schedule.

What a great non-conference schedule — better than last year’s, which wasn’t shabby. Of course, we sailed (relatively) through last year and then fell into an enigmatic funk the rest of the season. One thing’s always for certain: November can’t get here soon enough.

As for IPFW, was that an ESPNU game this last year?

I’m counting any road game during the nonconference as a good experience for the team, but you’re right that IPFW isn’t a top-notch opponent.
