A statistical look at Michigan State basketball, with a dash of football talk

Delvon Roe update: You can exhale now

Sounds like the surgery went as well as could have been hoped for:

After Roe developed swelling in his left knee last week, the MSU medical staff scheduled him to have exploratory surgery. During Tuesday’s operation performed by Dr. Mike Shingles, small particles of cartilage were cleaned out of the knee, according to a news release issued by the MSU sports information department.

Roe, who was already restricted to limited action this summer while recovering from major surgery on his right knee, should be cleared to return to action in about six weeks, the release said.

This is obviously still a setback in Roe getting up to full speed after missing most of his final season of high school basketball, but he should be ready to play by the beginning of the regular season if all goes according to schedule.

I’d expect we’ll see Roe eased into the lineup more gradually than he might have been absent the second surgery, but having him available to contribute as a freshman in a somewhat limited manner is certainly preferable to not having him available at all.  Beyond Goran Suton and Roe, there’s a pretty good quantity of big men (Gray, Green, Ibok, Herzog) but it’s not clear how much quality we can expect from that group.

Anyway, I’ll go ahead and resign myself to a smaller lineup, with Morgan playing the 4 spot most of the time.  I’ll turn my obsessive blogger attention to the next part of the equation: If we’re going to play a smaller lineup, we have to play at a faster pace!
