MLive’s Gang Green has a nice rundown of the seven guys on the radar for what we assume is the one remaining slot to be filled in MSU’s 2009 recruiting class. All seven guys are of the forward variety; I still worry that will make the roster too thin at the wing position for 2010-11. Top-ranked Renaldo Sidney of Los Angeles doesn’t seem like he’s a real possibility. Jamil Wilson would appear to be the best case scenario.
Looking further down the road, Scout.com’s Sam Webb reports in the Detroit News that MSU and UM have already begun seriously recruiting sophomore-to-be Brandan Kearney, a 6′4″ point guard for Detroit Southeastern. Izzo and Beilein are both reportedly very high on Kearney:
Though Kearney clearly still is a work in progress, instate rivals Michigan and Michigan State have seen enough to be extremely impressed.
“(Tom Izzo) said what makes Brandan so special is his basketball IQ,” Stan Edwards said. “He hasn’t seen that kind of basketball IQ in a point guard his age in a long time. He reminds him of Steve Smith (the former Pershing, MSU and Atlanta Hawks player).”
Edwards said U-M coach John Beilein saw Kearney play at the King James Shooting Stars Classic in Akron, Ohio.
“He said Brandan shoots very well and has a great sense of court vision for his age,” Edwards said. “He loves his size. He said you just don’t find a kid with that kind of size these days that has a true point guard’s mentality.”
Stan Edwards is Kearney’s cousin (uncle?), a former Michigan football player, and the father of Braylon Edwards–so that may give Michigan an edge they wouldn’t otherwise have.
