A statistical look at Michigan State basketball, with a dash of football talk

Thursday Night Links

Dave Dye indicates Izzo may make another lineup change to prevent the three freshmen from being on the floor together too much.

Will Ferrell made Izzo laugh.

Luke Winn drops MSU to very bottom of his 16-spot power rankings.  Oddly, he chooses to focus his comments on Kalin Lucas’ love for the Wayan brothers.

Kenpom’s mailbag features interesting analysis of (1) why Illinois does so well in his formula rankings and (2) whether fouling when you’re up by 2 in closing seconds of a game is a good strategy.  Kenpom notes this is a strictly theoretical exercise, as most coaches won’t foul when they’re up by 3, let alone 2.

Indiana plays at Illinois tonight (9:00, ESPN).  I suspect the Illini faithful won’t exactly be rolling out the red carpet for Mr. Gordon.

Close, but no cigar last night for the Illini. A great game, I suppose. It’s too bad Illinois continues their uncanny ability to let things slip through their fingers. Of course, I’m sure they’ll somehow get things together when we show up in Chambana.

With Indiana and Wisconsin continuing to win these close games, there’s no chance at righting our ship and finishing with even a share of the conference title. Pretty disappointing, given all the hype and anticipating leading up to this season (none of which was overdone, I thought). However, the final road push through the toughest part of our schedule may be beneficial for the conference tourney and then the NCAAs. It’s too bad the Drews won’t get the title that everyone expected.
